Although in Europe stringent regulations on pollution limitations from autovehicle exhaust gases have not yet been introduced, electronic fuel injection systems are used on top class cars and are intended to reduce gasoline consumption and to improve car performances, in particular acceleration. The recent moves made by some European countries to enforce pollution regulations also in Europe starting from 1986 is giving momentum to the development and to the manufacturing of electronic injection systems. The present paper aims to describe the use of thick films in the electronic parts of a systems developed in Italy and now in production. The systems controls also the ignition spark timing. In it the engine load is determined trhough an indirect measurement of the mass-air-flow by a high accuracy pressure sensor. Thick film hybrid circuits are used to provide the analog interfaces in the electronic control unit which, then, results to be implemented by some monolithic IC's, by eight hybrid circuits and by very few discrete components, mounted all together on a single printed card board. While the computation of the ignition spark timing is performed by the same microprocessor controlling the injectors timing and phasing, another thick film circuit, assembled together with the ignition coil, takes care of the dwell angle of the spark energy. Finally, the pressure sensor determing the engine load makes use of the piezoresistivity of properly prepared thick film strain gauges. Their output is conditioned by a thick film circuit assembled in the same housing with the sensor diaphragm.
