Optimizing lightweight structures without fatigue testing is insufficiently accurate due to hidden weaknesses or too high resistancy reserves remaining undetected. For this reason, Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) performs laboratory examinations on its bogie frames by way of static simulations and fatigue tests. The test programmes are derived from measurements obtained under service conditions, which are also used as reference for the laboratory test results.
