Fatigue crack growth was studied with fracture mechanics specimens on three rail steels at different stress ratios in air and in vacuum. The fatigue crack growth rate versus DeltaKeff was found to be independent of the test conditions. A beach marking technique in railways has been developed. Fractography analysis of 'kidney-shape' fatigue cracks in rails heads make possible to propose crack development models depending on the crack initiation location. The study of the plastic deformations in the wake of the cracks, using the X-Ray Fractography technique was done on fracture surfaces of both laboratory specimen and 'kidney-shape' fatigue crack in rail head to define a calibration in stress intensity factor for 'kidney-shape' fatigue crack in rail head.
