Honeycomb catalysts of Pt and Pd, with and without CeO2 or WO3 which is added as promoter, were treated thermally at 500 Cel, 700 Cel, 900 Cel and 1100 Cel respectively. Their catalytic activity toward methanol oxidation and the reaction mechanism were both obviously changed. The activity of Pt catalyst is superior to that of Pd at low temperature whereas its stability is inferior at high temperature. Pt with CeO2 has less thermal stability as compared to Pt without CeO2, however, Pd with CeO2 is less affected. Tungstates were formed by interacting of WO3 with MgO and CaO in cordierite support, as determined by X-ray diffraction. The kinetic networks of methanol oxidation on both fresh and aging Pt catalysts are proposed.
