Use of 15 % methanol-gasoline blend (M15) can be expected to reduce photochemical production of ozone and PAN (peroxyacetylnitrate) in the air mass passing over Oslo and in the surroundings. The rather modest reductions of ozone and PAN would amount to ca. 3 % and 5 %, respectively, at the time of maximum downwind concentrations. Formaldehyde would remain virtually unaffected. Use of 95 % methanol-gasoline blend (M95) would reduce ozone and PAN concentrations in the passing air mass by 9 % and 25 %, respectively, at the time of maximum concentrations downwind of Oslo. Formaldehyde would be reduced by 3 %, but carbon monoxide would remain unchanged. Reductions in ozone and PAN concentrations are only to a slight degree dependent on changes in exhaust emissions of hydrocarbons and volatile organic compounds. Reduction of oxides of nitrogen emissions, due to use of M15 and M95, result in lesser production of O3 and PAN.
