In methanol fuelled diesel engines using glow plug assisted ignition, reduction in glow plug energy requirements is of prime importance. Effect of glow plug projection in the combustion chamber, use of low thermal conductivity pistons to restrict engine cooling, use of high compression ratio and intake air throttling was studied on the glow plug energy requirements and glow plug temperatures in a methanol fuelled 4-stroke direct injection diesel engine. Further, the injection system was modified to accommodate the necessary high methanol cyclic delivery. Results showed significant reductions in glow plug energy and improvements in the engine thermal efficiency.
