Methanol from wood has been researched on production and utilization aspects since 1978. Technical and economical results have presented methanol as a potential alternative fuel under brazilian conditions. Methanol utilization works, concentrated at firt in dynamometer and bench tests, have complemented through a fleet test operation. A fleet of 9 vehicles has been conducted for 18 months. Fuel economy, performance and components life results are related. Six of them are passenger cars (2 Escort-Ford and 4 van type - GM) with Otto engine applied. The others are cargo vehicles with different technology applied, that is, Otto cycle substitution, cetane improver and glow-plug. The field tests were accomplished under some different route types, charge conditions and for passenger car according to SAE J 1321 and J 1264 procedures. Fuel economy improvement is obtained in Otto engines cars with methanol operation, pure or blended with the original fuel. This result confirms the higher efficiency with the methanol participation increase in the fuel in dynamometer tests. Diesel engines trucks, however, has not confirmed in field tests the efficiency advantage obtained in dynamometer tests.
