Toyota started a development programme for methanol vehicles in 1980. In the basic test phase, the test vehicles were fueled on M100 but used gasoline for cold starts. Phases II and III were initiated in order to solve the practical problems which had arisen in phase I. Results indicated that clogging of the fuel injectors ceases to occur when a ball type injector is used in place of the pintle type. Hot weather driveability was improved by the adoption of an in-tank fuel pump. Adjustments to the injector fuel flow rates and use of M85 fuel enabled cold starts to be reliably made at a temperature of -20 Cel. A 5.3 % improvement in fuel economy was achieved by means of the partial lean burn system. Application of the methanol lean burn system with lean mixture sensor enabled fuel economy to be improved by 9 % and NOx emission to be reduced.
