Distributed Numerical Control (DNC) is a hierarchy of computers that download and distribute numerical control tape data through the system to a particular machine tool in the NC machine shop. Lockheed-Georgia's DNC downloads a tape image from the IBM-compatible mainframe through the DNC Vax host and distributes it to a particular machine terminal unit (MTU) to interface to a designated NC or CNC machine. The downloading of the tape image is the basis for any DNC system; this system goes beyond the basic concept of DNC by providing maintenance monitoring of a machine tool. Maintenance monitoring and other enhancements have made the DNC system Lockheed's cornerstone to factory automation.
