Ti-6Al-4V gas bottles and liquid propellant tanks are being extensively used in Indian Launch Vehicle and Satellite programmes. The tank sizes varied between 1.2 mm thick, 190 mm diameter to 12 mm thick, 600 mm diameter. Stringent specifications of the tanks have been described. The controls on forging parameters required to be adopted to arrive at the appropriate microstructure and dimensional tolerances have been identified. Parameters like temperature, forging pressure, die design, reduction per pass and lubricant are shown to affect the flowability of the alloy and its duplex microstructure. The amount and distribution of microstructural constituents have been shown to play a significant role in the realisation of the specified properties.
