The paper describes the main components of a military version of the Differential Compound Engine, the engine operating at very high boost pressure and bmep, and with a high pressure ratio, centrifugal compressor substituted for the rotary positive displacement compressor previously used on more moderately rated version the DCE. The second part of the paper deals with detailed steady state performance predictions and comparisons with an alternative very high output, two stage turbocharged engine followed by a 9 speed stepped transmission, showing the clear advantage of the DCE in terms of continuous torque back-up and superor fuel economy at higher speeds and loads. In the final section, the paper presents transient response, both of the DCE alone and of the complete 40 tonne tracked vehicle.
