Mitsubishi Motors Corporation mounts an electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission (ELC-4) with over-drive on its front wheel drive vehicles. This 4-speed automatic transmission has a simple structure in which a single clutch has been added to the conventional 3-speed automatic transmission. During gear shifting, the hydraulic pressure applied to the friction elements is controlled electronically in a suitable manner according to the vehicle driving conditions and the gear-shifting process. Thus, the problems associated with the shift quality of 4-speed transmission have been solved. To further improve the shift quality, the hydraulic pressure acting on the friction elements is subjected to feedback control so that the changes in speed of the input shaft during gear changes will approach the target value. The computer also studies the hydraulic pressure which has been feedback controlled during the previous gear change and determines the hydraulic pressure used when initiating the subsequent gear change, and thus obtained excellent results.
