In previous years, U.S. Steel-Gary Works experienced higher-than-normal rejections at automotive stamping plants due to breakage of USS Galva-One (one side electro-galvanized sheet) and strain on Zinc-Rich Primed Sheet. Based upon laboratory investigations and bench scale experiments, both problems were related to nitrogen pickup. Subsequent modifications and implementation of annealing process controls resulted in improved mechanical properties, decreased variability, and fewer customer rejections.
