The primary problem in preserving the existing cast iron mains is prevention of joint leaks. Prevention of pipe fracture is a secondary problem. A number of concepts for improved preservation and renewal systems were evaluated using a numerical evaluation scheme developed in this program. The primary improved method developed in this program is an internal sealing method called: Tap-Hole Sealing. In Tap-Hole Sealing, a hose with a sprayhead at its end is inserted through a conventional tap hole in the main and used to spray sealant on joints 50 to 100 feet in each direction from the tap hole. The method promises to be fast, efficient, and economical. Additional work is required to optimize equipment and sealant formulations for commercial use. A concept for improved external sealing of cast iron pipe joints was developed which utilizes small hole excavation techniques and polyurethane foam as the sealant. Further evaluation and development of this method is also recommended. A system involving external soil grouting to seal leaks was evaluated and found to be very promising, if major technical problems can be solved.
