Devices which are exposed to the hazards and degradation processes presented by a marine environment often exhibit multimode failure. In such cases the reliability may be difficult to model. The case history of such a device is presented in this paper. The dominant failure mode is identified as a cathodic delamination mechanism and a reliability model is developed on this basis. The results offer the possibility of predicting the reliability of similar devices from laboratory data obtained prior to the initiation of service.
