The assembly of large aircraft structures is still accomplished with the assistance of complex fixtures, layout templets, drill templets, paint spots, etc. Preparations for the actual assembly, such as riveting and installation of two piece fasteners, are time and labor-intensive. Using examples from the euopean aerospace industry, the advantages of automatic assembly methods are discussed. These methods include NC positioners, industrial robots, and other flexible handling systems that reduce time and improve quality and flexibility.
