The railroad industry in general and the AAR in particular have been heavily involved in the testing of wheel/rail lubrication, which has been shown to have a considerable effect on train resistance and fuel consumption. Concerns raised about the effect of lubrication on train braking have been addressed by both dynamometer and field tests conducted by the AAR. Results have shown that lubrication has little effect on composition shoe braking above 25 miles per hour. At lower speeds, however, dynamometer testing showed lower retarding forces with over lubrication (grease on the wheel tread). A simplified data collection and analysis system, centered around a portable PC, was developed for these brake shoe tests. This system allows for on-site data reduction, analysis, and graphing with a commercially available spread sheet program.
