The predicted retardation performance and fuel economy of a city bus, equipped with an add-on hydro-pneumatic energy storage system is presented. A fuel economy improvement of 26.9 % is projected for a vehicle of 13600 kg (30100 1b) weight, running on the U.S. Department of Transportation, Advanced Design Bus driving cycle. A significant finding is that the thermodynamically ideal accumulator (that which provides a given energy storage capacity at the minimum gas volume), does not provide the optimum performance, considering overall energy conservation, over the range of real driving situations. The performance analyses presented here have permitted the design parameters for a prototype vehicle to be optimised to significant advantage.
