Today there is a very great interest in using industrial robots in the aircraft manufacturing industry. The operations which are of special interest include machining of sheet metal plates, hatches and all kinds of routing. However, today there exist globally only a few operational applications. Those facts have resulted in a very intense research among aircraft manufacturers, universities and other high technology institutes. The manually performed operations, for example drilling, can today be mechanized by using commercially available equipment. Why do companies try to implement industrial robots in this type of manufacturing when there already exist solutions to their problems. This paper answers this question and describes machining tests carried out with an industrial robot at Linkoping University. Machining of stringers used in a civilian Aircraft is described in detail. The problems that occurred in the tests are analyzed and solved. The special equipment used in the tests is given a brief presentation.
