Increasing competition in the Motor Industry is compelling manufacturers to reduce their dependence on labour. In tomorrow's world continuity of output, product quality and reduced inventory will be more important than direct labour cost which, in the past, has been the motive for the introduction of automation. Final Assembly operations is the remaining area of vehicle manufacture which has high labour content. It is also the most complex in terms of materials and components, assembly operations and quality control. Achieving a successful high level of automation to this area will require not only intelligent automation but also significant changes to Product Design, Manufacturing Facility and Assembly Sequence.
