Coal is the most abundant fossil fuel in the world. It is of interest as an alternative to oil fuel in Stirling engine power plants used for marine propulsion, stationary power, railway locomotives and large off-highway vehicles used in mining, forestry and agriculture. In this paper the application of Stirling engines for marine propulsion is briefly explored. A novel form of engine called the Bingham-Stirling engine is briefly described. The alternative approach of converting existing marine diesel engines to operate as Stirling engines is investigated with particular reference to a 1.7 MW 12-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine used in Yangste river ferry boats.
