A computer-controlled inspection system is described which uses a multi-frequency eddy current technique, in conjunction with computer-based algorithms, to automatically measure case depth and surface hardness of vehicle axle shafts in a production plant. In this approach, measurements are made of eddy current vector responses using several different excitation frequencies and magnetic field strengths. Responses at key frequencies are chosen by the computer in an iterative manner based on the responses at certain nominal frequencies. These responses are then combined in algorithms, based on multiple linear regressions, to calculate case depth and surface hardness. The results are printed out and stored for later statistical quality control analysis.
