Simulations of well control problems in water depths to 13200 feet (4 km) and total depths of 33000 feet (10 km) have been performed and analyzed for the Ocean Margin Drilling Program (OMDP), a scientific drilling program funded by the National Science Foundation. The primary objective of the simulations was to determine whether conventional well control procedures would be adequate. The conclusion is that alternate procedures are needed for safe well control in deep water, and one approach is proposed in this paper.
