This paper traces scientific programs in deep ocean drilling and relates the technology developed by these programs. It also describes the additional technology needed to carry out programs proposed for the next decade. Since 1957 the National Science Foundation has supported scientific deep sea drilling through several projects, beginning with Phase 1 of Project Mohole and continuing to the current and highly successful Deep Sea Drilling Project using the Glomar Challenger. These programs have combined existing technology in use by the offshore drilling industry with new technology developed especially for the later projects. More than 700 holes in water depths ranging up to 23000 ft (7.010 m) have been drilled and cored and have resulted in a major increase in knowledge of the geological history and processes of the earth. Technology developed in the course of drilling is in widespread use by the offshore industry today. The Ocean Margin Drilling Program proposed for the next decade will require additional advances in technology, such as a 13.200 ft (4.023 m) riser and well control system, which should also be of great interest to the offshore drilling industry.
