A general mathematical model was written to describe in detail the operation of diaphragm vacuum pumps used in automobiles. The accuracy of the model was verified by experimental data obtained from a production belt-driven vacuum pump. The model was subsequently cast into non-dimensional form, and a basic set of parameters that govern the operation of pumps was defined. Using the non-dimensional model, various parameters were investigated for their effects on performance and durability. Performance was measured by 1) the ability of the pump to evacuate a vacuum storage tank, and 2) the amount of work (neglecting friction) required by the pump to evacuate the tank. Durability was quantified in terms of the pressure differentials across the pump diaphragm and the contact force between the pump shaft and driving cam. General dimensionless operating curves were generated for designers to use as guidelines in designing durable, high-performance vacuum pumps for automotive applications.
