Properties of mass produced polyethylene pipe may be affected by changes in polymerization, blending, compounding and extrusion conditions from one production run to the next. The Compressed Ring Test has been proposed as a relatively simpl. and inexpensive test for use by suppliers and natural gas utilities to monitor lot-to-lot differences in polyethylene piping. It is now an ASTM practice. The Compressed Ring Test was proven to be an excellent test for detection of some surface defects whether caused by extrusion condidtions or by outdoor exposure.
