Experience in the application of analogue and digital electronic technologies for the control and monitoring of warship machinery are described. Future trends and possibilities are also discussed. The main aim for monitoring systems will be to reduce maintenance workload by automatic logging and to provide better warning of malfunction by trend analysis, and recognition of abnormal conditions. The choice of VDU or instrument panel displays remains a matter of contention between different users. Costs are tending to balance for medium size systems, and the deciding factor may be through-life flexibility. Control systems will be refined using the increased processing capability to optimise simpler cheap actuators and improve operating performance such as fuel economy. In both control and monitoring the emphasis will be on the use of proven techniques to reduce the operating and maintenance cost rather than innovation for its own sake, with all its attendant risks.
