At the beginning of 1982 the Royal Navy had more than 20 operational warships powered solely by aero-derived gas turbines, all but the two Aircraft Carriers with 2 Olympus and 2 Tyne engines in a COGOG configuration. All of these have now spent some time in the South Atlantic, both during the Falklands crisis in the Spring of 1982 and on patrol since. The paper describes the lessons learnt from many months of operations in a hostile environment.
