Contrary to what manufacturers and legislators believe only few motorists actually observe the rules on simple road wheel and tyre maintenance, speed and load limitations. It is therefore up to manufacturers to build in an adequate 'abuse factor'. With frontwheel drive cars steel belted radial tyres on the trailing rear wheels can now last so long that corrosion of substantial numbers of steel filaments and partial disbonding can create real safety hazards, despite the fact that they retain more than the legal tread depth. The effect of hardening of rubber with age and lowering of temperature varies between car tyre types and can lead to loss of directional control in cold winters. For hot summer operation the rise in rubber temperature due to aggressive motoring, particularly when inflation pressure is low, can cause severe, irreversible degradation of bondong of carcass layers.
