Initially a contractor was asked to select and develop a design for a concrete cold water pipe. After the first report was submitted, and in view of the contractor's wide experience of marine construction, the task was widened to encompass the more general aspects of the use of concrete in offshore structures. This report is the outcome of the study, and in it concrete was reviewed as a material for marine construction and the practicalities of constructing large marine structures as well as outlining our proposals for a lightweight concrete cold water pipe. It is proposed that the cold water pipe be slip formed insitu from a platform of the spar configuration, and would incorporate hinges comprising a large number of synthetic tendons. (Kursetz)
