The concept of using diesel engines in hovercraft was brought about by the fact that large increases in fuel charges which occurred during the nineteen seventies had necessitated the need to design a more cost effective vessel. Apart from modifications to basic design, certain hovercraft designers undertook an investigation into the cost advantages of using lightweight diesel engines over the favoured gas turbines, which although having a considerable power weight advantage, also had considerably higher fuel consumption. Through this investigation, which considered both aircooled and watercooled diesel engines, it was decided that the aircooled diesel, with its many advantages over its watercooled counterpart was the most suitable substitute for the gas turbine, and hence the AP1-88 hovercraft was born.
