Although various states, provinces, regions, and countries in North America have individually assessed and addressed alternative fuels for high-way vehicles, there is a strong and intractable link between all on a practicable commercial basis. The resource/fuel menus from which to select options also have a great deal in common, and there have been considerable cooperation and discussion among sponsors and application researchers throughout Canada and the United States. A number of options to replace petroleum as the automotive fuel have been demonstrated, researched, and assessed. These include methane and other gaseous fuels, alcohols and other oxygenated compounds, and fuels from synthetic crude oil. An overview is provided of the key factors related to supply and use of each of these, the primary criteria for commercialization thereof, and the major barriers thereto.
