All regulators used in the gas industry can be classified as either high or low pressure regulators. In fact, many regulators could be considered both, depending on the definition of high and low pressure. Regulators are required in the production, transmission, measurement and distribution of natural gas. Pressures can range from several thousand psig at the gas well to under 1 psig at the end user. Many variables should be considered in selecting a regulator. Every regulator design is unique and should be evaluated for each application. Classifications are helpful only to distinguish between different types of regulators and should not be used as the final design criteria.
