Soaring fuel costs are forcing engineers to re-examine their practice in the matter of recovering useful power from diesel engine waste heat. After a review of diesel engine waste heat sources and of the potential value of this heat for power production, author describes a series of steam and organic fluid cycles to meet various external conditions. The cycles are compared using a simple method for calculating the irreversible power loss due to each individual component and drawing up a power balance to show clearly which components are the worst thermodynamic offenders. Components for organic fluid cycles will of course require special development, and more needs to be known about the fluids themselves. Relatively large heat exchanger surfaces are likely to be required. The cycles should, however, be simple, and there is reason to hope that the actual turbine may prove substantially more efficient than steam machines. Whatever working fluid is chosen, far more power can be recovered from waste heat than is normally required for auxiliary purposes at sea, and its use to assist with main propulsion should be urgently considered.
