Thermal resistance of two kinds of survival suits for cold sea water immersion was tested examining changes in core and skin temperature, finger strength and others. Each of four male subjects was kept immersed, wearing a survival suit, in a cold water-pool for three hours. The water and room temperatures were kept constant at 0, 3, or 6 Cel. The body temperature decreased more markedly during the immersion in water of lower temperature. The finger strength measured by a dynamometer decreased in parallel with decrease of body temperature. The finger strength level was considered to well indicate the peripheral efficiency of the thermal resistance of the suit. Further improvement of such suits was found necessary, in particular with respect to hand and finger movements and peripheral thermal insulation.
