Since work conducted at sea may be hampered by waves, breakwaters are required to protect the work site from high waves in heavy sea. Floating breakwaters offer several advantages over conventional fixed breakwaters as offshore development advances into deeper seas. Hitachi Zosen has undertaken the development of a new breakwater system with better performance. The new system is termed an air-controlled type floating breakwater and utilizes the interaction of diffraction and radiated waves through the proper control of pneumatic pressure to attenuate the transmitted wave. Theoretical examination and tank tests with scale models were carried out in order to confirm the effectiveness of the system. As a result, the configuration for a floating breakwater with the best performance was determined. Then a fullscale test was carried out at sea in a location off Uwajima City in Ehime Prefecture and good results were obtained. Through the above noted research and development, valuable know-how regarding the design, building and mooring of floating breakwaters was gained. Using the accumulated techniques, Hitachi Zosen is now able to construct floating capable for practical use.
