Standard overhaul procedures for U.S. Army helicopter engines require operational vibration acceptance testing after rebuild. Engines frequently experimence vibrations which exceed allowable overhaul work requirement limits. The re-work/retest cycle for these engines constitute a significant cost penalty to the overhaul center. Analytical and experimental analyses have indicated that multispeed, multiplane power turbine balancing may be more appropriate than existing low-speed balancing methods. To evaluate the applicability of high-speed balancing, the U.S. Army has undertaken a program to develop a prototype system for performing high-speed balancing on assembled power turbine rotors. This paper outlines the development of this balancing system. Particular emphasis is placed on the hardware required to apply the multispeed, multiplane balancing technology. (Wassmann)
