Owing to the rapid escalation of fuel oil prices, the shipping and shipbuilding industries are making every effort to achieve fuel saving of ships by the developing new designs as well as by the operational practices. In the circumstances, it has become of greater importance than ever to analyze voyage data on a routine and rational basis in order to evaluate ships' propulsive performance under various service conditions and to improve the design and operational measures. IHI developed and has been using for several years a computer program for analyzing service performance data based on ships' abstract logbooks, by means of which it is possible to obtain statistical data of the sea margin, propeller r.p.m. reduction, fouling, aging effects, etc. Such analytical data can be utilized not only for designing new ships and propellers but also for the rational evaluation of underwater hull surface maintenance by the operator. This paper describes the outline of the computer program and an example of analysis on a 130000 DWT tanker. (Wassmann)
