The use of synthetic based hydraulic fluids in aerospace application is constantly increasing. Since the synthetic based hydraulic fluids are more expensive than mineral oil based hydraulic fluids for similar temperature ranges, one must ask why. In this paper, the various classes of synthetic based hydraulic fluids are discussed with particular emphasis on their advantages and disadvantages as compared to MIL-H-5606, the standard mineral oil based hydraulic fluid. Particular emphasis is placed upon the fire resistance characteristics of aerospace hydraulic fluids as this is becoming of increasing importance in considering which hydraulic fluid to select and design a system around. Water based hydraulic fluids are not covered in this paper. (Wassmann)
