By understanding important structural design considerations, the design engineer can provide a gondola structure to stand up in the rugged service environment. In the case of the Railgon development, serviceability of existing designs and this understanding of fundamental and redundant structures led to new design solutions. The performance of the end including the corner connection is important to gondola serviceability. The Railgon end provides for increased durability, a cost effective design and safety appliance protection. The side post attachment into the underframe is critical. While a variety of designs can affect the shear load transfer from the post web into the under frame, Railgon's connection affords a substantial improvement in load transfer. (Wassmann)
