The Engine Usage Monitoring System (EUMS) was the result of a growing recognition of the need to obtainuantified data from in-service military engines in order to know how they were used, and to determine the extent and rates at which major and/or critical components' fatigue lives were consumed. Funding limitations, coupled with a need to develop the system quickly, led to decisions to use the Phillips-type magnetic tape cassette as the recording medium, use serial digital data formatting, and take advantage of current developments in the civil AIDS field. The full potential of the EUMS Mk II system will not be exploited to achieve savings in costs and maintenance man-hours until engines are properly equipped with the appropriate and necessary range of transducers. This paper up-dates the total system development progress and covers the range of experience gained in operational areas of some of the UK and U.S. military services. (Wassmann)
