The U.S. Navy is engaged in a continuing effort to evaluate and select thermal coatings for protection of air-launched missiles in the event of shipboard fire. The program discussed was to develop a process for applying an intumescent thermal protection coating to Sidewender and Shrike mission warheads. Critical considerations were surface finish, thickness, tolerance, producibility at a field site, and cost. A secondary objective was improvement of compression strength. One process method consisted of casting liquid coating material directly on white polyvinyl fluoride film to produce a composite sheet of flexible coating with pre-finished exterior surface. The composite sheet was secondarily bonded to Shrike warhead test specimens and exposed to a controlled jet fuel fire. Time to failure was increased from about two minutes for unprotected warheads to over five minutes for those with composite sheet coating. (Kursetz)
