The primary purpose of an antenna support structure is to maintain the critical alignment between the reflector feed assemblies and the reflectors themselves and thus achieve the required antenna 'pointing' accuracy. The large temperature extremes encountered in on-orbit operation dictate the need for a low thermal expansion, thermally stable material. This need is fulfilled by the use of composite materials, i.e. graphite epoxy. This paper describes the materials and process considerations applicable to the fabrication of the INTELSAT V antenna support structure. Composite laminates were developed to meet specific stiffness and expansion requirements. Tooling and implementation concepts are also discussed. (Stoehr)
