Resin batches with known variations were converted into prepreg tapes using production processes. The variations did not affect laminate properties sufficiently to be detected in shipping/receiving inspection testing. Although the test program is incomplete, some variations yield lower than normal properties after environmental exposure. Concurrently, the resin and prepreg samples were subjected to chemical analysis. The structurally unacceptable variation identified to date can be detected by chemical analysis. Also, the majority, if not all, of the variations studied are prevented by existing quality control plans enforced by the resin suppliers. Thus, it appears feasible to prepare matrix specifications for both resin systems to screen out structrally undesirable matrix variations by incorporating chemical analytical verification requirements in existing quality control plans.
