Atmospheric flow over a two-dimensional forward-facing step is analyzed by an approach using the Navier-Stokes equations with a two-equation model of turbulence. A parametric study in the characteristic parameters of the assumed logarithmic approach velocity profile shows that an increase of the surface roughness z0 gives rise to higher turbulence levels in the shear layer originating from the step corner. This, in turn, results in higher shear stress leading to faster reattachment of the separated flow. The typical eddy size in the shear layer increases with z0 and causes rapid spreading of a region of high streamwise vorticity gradients. (Jensen)
