A mathematical model of a tractor-semitrailer with three degrees of freedom - the lateral motion of the tractor, yaw motions of the tractor and the semitrailer - is developed. To the linearized equations of motion, the root locus analyses are applied to determine relatively optimal vehicle parameters. The parameters thus obtained are used in a nonlinear analysis, which employs a combination of Poincare and Liapunov stability theories. Various singular points are determined. As only one singular point is found to be stable, a continuous closed stability domain surrounding this singular point is determined. The directions of solution vectors influence the stable or unstable motion patterns. An example dealing with the front axle tire blow-out illustrates the use of stability domains in studying the motion affected by impulsive perturbing forces. (DePo)
