Thermal design analyses and test data are presented for a low temperature phase change material (PCM) container used to provide temperature control of a satellite borne infrared detector system. The PCM working fluid, 1-heptene, has a melting point of minus 119 Cel and a boiling point of 93 Cel. Experimental data of the temperature transients during heating/melting and cooling/freezing are presented and compared with numerically predicted results. Aluminum containers with and without internal fins are considered for several orientations with respect to gravity. Special emphasis is given to the measurement and prediction of the effects of supercooling. (De Posamentier)
