This paper presents an overview of the U.S. marine fuel bunkering market and its relation to steam and diesel propulsion equipment. Principal focus is on residual fuel, covering present and projected future variability and performance requirements for both diesel and steam applications. Key fuel property requirements are highlighted, especially as they affect alternate fuel composition. Although the outlook on a technical basis could be considered favorable for liquid type alternate fuels, the ultimate acceptance will also be based upon their economic development together with the cost of equipment modification and maintenance.
