Although the description 'small internal-combustion engines' covers a wide variety of engines from those driving motorcycles and lawnmowers to low-rated industrial engines, the vast majority are fuelled by gasoline or automotive gasoil (diesel). It is anticipated that the demand for these fuels can be met by the oil industry into the next century. However, environmental pressures and the increased use of conversion to meet demand will lead to changes in fuel quality. Gasoline will become a low-lead or even unleaded fuel, and if the refinery and vehicle are considered as an integrated system, optimisation of total energy consumption may lead to a lower octane quality. As the availability of crude oil derived fuels diminishes, methanol may become an attractive fuel for internal-combustion engines. (Wassmann)
