This paper discusses the rationale and the Navy approach to obtain smooth hull coatings system for reducing ship drag. It reviews some of the more critical coatings developments augmented in some cases by underwater hull maintenance techniques which when combined into a systems approach can offer substantial gains in ship performance enhancement. The role of microfouling (slims) as it may affect drag is presented. The paper concludes with some predictions for trends in coatings development for the future. (Wassmann)
